About Lebanon

Lebanon boasts a vibrant history, having hosted some of the world›s greatest ancient civilizations. In recent years, Lebanon has been rebuilding its infrastructure and economy following its 15 year-long civil war, which ended in 1990.  Since thhen, Lebanon has faced intermittent bouts of conflict, partially due to its geostrategic position in the region. Seven years into the Syrian conflict, Lebanon remains at the forefront of one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time and where it has become the country with the highest number of refugees per capita. As of October 2017, the Government of Lebanon (GoL) estimates that the country hosts 1.5 million Syrians who have fled the conflict in Syria (including 997,905 registered as refugees with UNHCR), along with 34,000 Palestine Refugees from Syria (PRS), 35,000 Lebanese returnees, and a pre-existing population of more than 277,985 Palestine Refugees in Lebanon (PRL).

The vulnerabilities of each of these groups have different root causes, requiring the overall response strategy to include a multifaceted range of interventions from emergency aid to development assistance. Nearly half of the Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian populations affected by the crisis are children and adolescents: at least 1.4 million children under 18 are currently growing up at risk, deprived, and with acute needs for basic services and protection.

Public services are overstretched, with demand exceeding the capacity of institutions and infrastructure to meet needs. The service sectors are also overburdened, with the public health sector accumulating debt as displaced Syrian patients are unable to cover their part of the bill.

The conflict in Syria has significantly impacted Lebanon’s social and economic growth, caused deepening poverty and humanitarian needs, and exacerbated pre-existing development constraints in the country. Consequently the government along side with UN agencies , international, national NGOs have put in place the Lebanon Crisis Response Plan (LCRP) which is updated on a yearly basis in accordance to the reality present need.

LIVELIHOODS & FOOD SECURITY

We believe that helping families to increase and diversify their incomes is a critical way to reduce poverty, enable people to develop self-reliance, dignity and to become more resilient to the challenges they face. Our programs reached over.....people empowering them to support themselves and their families. Given that up to %70 of those living in absolute poverty are female, empowering women is a key prioirty within our livelihoods progrrammes.

Since the beginning of the Syrria crisis the labour force in Lebanon has increased by %50. Levels of unemployement have risen and wages significantly dropped, especially in the low skills sectors and poverty increased among both Lebanese and Syrian refugee populations. An estimated %52 of Syrian refugees are now unable to meet their minimum survival requirements and more thhan %70 are living below the poverty line.

To utilise the agricultural potential in lebanon, Leb Relief has started agricultural programmes which focus on the most vulnerable Lebanese farmer communities and syrian labourers to strenghen food chains that aims to assist the rural economy and support livelihoods substainable.

LebRelief has also introduced a range of market-based technical and vocational trainings to improve employability of vulnerable host and refugee youth. Thhrough this , LebRelief is supporting men and women to earn decent incomes by advocating for fair wages, equal remumeration and inclusive growth and have implemented cash for work problems.
